![]() We regrettably paid for the drinks package, we do not drink more than one bottle of wine between two of us with a dinner, but the frustration of continually asking for more wine became an issue. Having travelled previously with Viking where all drinks with meals are complimentary this is not the case with Riviera. ![]() The ship is very clean and maintained to a high standard but is rather dated. Flew to Lyon followed by a three and a half our uninteresting coach journey to the ship in Avignon. We are now looking to do another River or canal trip with Belmond. The French captain and first mate, worked to a very tight schedule probably due to the locks, do not expect him to be flexible. The decor inside is tired but really this was not a problem (it could be to some guests) Belmond could do with refitting this barge but all was very clean and the plumbing was good. It was a very hot week and we spent a lot of time in the lounge inside. The was air conditioning inside the barge. Do not take too many clothes! What was also very nice the river was quiet, very little river traffic, a few container barges and large river cruises. The cabins were small but we really only slept in the cabin. The layout and size of the lounge and dining room, all good. Well done to Jade her cooking was superb and we really challenged her with our complex dietary requirements. A really lovely taste of the country side although I was surprised how industrial this wide river was. All out excursions extremely enjoyable thanks to Cat and her mini bus. Please speak to one of our Travel Consultants about the different route options available. An excellent 5 days, 6 nights ,thanks to Cat, Jade, Kirsty and Becky (British crew) We were 12 people/6 couples cruising the Rhône from Avignon to Lyon. The cabins are beautifully appointed, and larger vessels feature swimming pools and bicycles for your use during the trip. Your excursions are also included, along with the service of an expert tour guide who will discuss ideas with you in detail each day so that tours and visits match your preferences. On a week's cruise you can expect to be served at least 15 different wines and over 20 cheeses, all sourced from the very regions you sail through by day. The high ratio of guests to staff means impeccable service is assured.Ī highlight of any Belmond Afloat in France trip will be the opportunity to discover the gastronomic heritage of France, and all meals and drinks are included. Attentive guides, chefs and staff are on hand to make sure you get the most out of each port of call along the way. Alternatively, take one of the barges as a private charter: it’s like having your very own private villa, with a relaxed house-party atmosphere with your family and friends, but with the added benefit of ever-changing scenery outside the windows. There are set suggested itineraries which you can join as a couple or a smaller group, with itineraries which include the best in gastronomy, culture and landscape of each region. Cruising in tandem is also possible for larger groups wishing to travel together. Sleeping from four to twelve guests, the seven ‘péniche-hôtels’ can be chartered by families or groups for sole use or booked on a cabin by cabin basis. Belmond’s collection of vessels operate from April to October on a variety of routes through Champagne, Burgundy and Provence. This has to be one of the most luxurious and relaxing ways to explore the rivers and canals of France – a beautiful appointed barge cruising at a stately pace through some of Europe’s most picturesque regions.
