![]() Mainly because the larger weapons that can hit the higher zones don't really rely on it, and the smaller weapons that would benefit from the elemental weaknesses a monster has generally can't be in constant reach of the areas that hurt a monster most.įor example, even though a Rathalos is HEAVILY weak to dragon on the back and wings, it's resistance is much higher on the legs and chest which is the bulk of what a DB/SnS user could reliably hit for 90% of a given fight. However, I've done some poking around and found that, while undoubtedly a large part of the damage even on smaller weapons like the SnS or the DB, raw damage still tends to be the bulk of the pain that you're dealing to any one monster. If you have one who's heavily susceptible to elemental damage, and you're using a weapon that can string together rapid hits to rack up elemental damage easily, then using element up might be the best choice. Knowing what to take is a matter of knowing how weak a monster is. using a Seregios DB instead of an elemental one against a monster who's heavily resistant to elemental damage Even if a monster has an elemental weakness that can be exploited, it might only be a fraction of the damage that raw could do in the same span of time with the same attacks to the same body part. ![]() However, this is assuming that you have a monster who's massively resistant to slashing damage and decently weak to fire damage.ĭepending on the resistances, both raw and elemental of any given monster and the individual hitzones that they have, these numbers can fluctate wildly at the end of the normal damage calculations, as the monster's resistances are the final step in the math for each type of damage. This is, generally speaking, what people mean when they say that every weapon in the game is mostly equal in terms of viability. In the time it takes the GS to get in two level three hits, each dealing 30+10=80 damage, a SnS or a DB could get upwards of five or more hits in, dealing closer to 75+ damage. So while a greatsword charge at level three with a 300 fire damage might deal something like 30 raw and 10 fire damage to a specific monster in a specific part, a weaker SnS or DB with much less raw but the same fire might deal something more like 5 raw damage and 10 fire, meaning that the faster weapons are going to get a lot more out of that fire attack than the greatsword. It's a flat tenth of the displayed elemental, no matter what weapon, which is then factored with your sharpness and reduced by the amount of elemental resistance the monster has for the hitzone you're hitting.īecause elemental damage is largely constant aside from the hitzone you're connecting with and the monster's relevant resistance, faster weapons tend to benefit more from elemental attacks as you don't care about large motion values, just ensuring that each attack hits since its a bit more of a flat rate of damage than one that fluctuates like the raw does due to motion values. The elemental damage is a bit simpler, but still tricky. ![]() The raw damage you deal is based on a constant multiplier per weapon by the displayed damage to get the raw damage, which is then factored against your sharpness and the motion value for the specific attack you're doing, which is then reduced based on a monster's resistance to the type of damage you're doing based on the hitzone you connect with. the damage you're doing with any one hit is dependent upon a lot of things.
